Southeast Europe is home to some of the last wild rivers on the continent. Supporting vast biodiversity and impacting the well-being of around 20 million people across the region, fresh water is our most important natural resource.
To preserve it, global environmental organization The Nature Conservancy has teamed up with six partners across five countries to establish the United for Rivers Coalition. By establishing new protected areas centered around freshwater ecosystems and encouraging the engagement of local communities, we want to safeguard the ecological, social, and cultural values of rivers in the region and reduce pressures caused by pollution, climate change, and unsustainable development.
We believe that by working together, across different sectors and with the support and engagement of local communities, we can improve the state of our rivers and protect them for future generations.
