New Exhibition Rivers, Traces and Entanglements Opens in Zagreb

The exhibition Rivers, Traces and Entanglements opened tonight at the Gallery AMZ in Zagreb as part of celebrating the Earth Day. Organized by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb (AMZ), the exhibition invites visitors to explore rivers as dynamic, living landscapes—emphasizing their ecological, historical, cultural, and political significance.

The works on display were created by contemporary Southeast European artists wh

o participated in an art colony held in May 2024 in Kotli, Croatia. Immersed in this unique landscape—shaped by the Mirna River flowing through ancient mills and deep, cascading pools—the artists engaged in a process of shared reflection, experimentation, and conversation. Their time in Kotli laid the foundation for a thoughtful artistic inquiry into rivers as active participants in shaping our communities, imagination, and relationships.

Through immersive audio and video installations, photography, digital art, animation, and music, each artist explores rivers as living presences—carriers of stories, memories, and human traces. Rather than serving as passive scenery, rivers are portrayed as collaborators: deeply entangled with ecological transformations, historical trauma, cultural identity, and social justice. Collectively, the artworks invite visitors to reimagine their relationship with rivers and the responsibilities those relationships entail.

The exhibition is part of the United for Rivers initiative, which aims to protect 400 km of rivers across Southeast Europe by 2030. Through this exhibition, TNC and partners seek to foster public awareness and inspire meaningful conservation.

Rivers, Traces and Entanglements will remain open until May 17, 2025 at the Gallery AMZ, Pavla Hatza 6, Zagreb.
